Understanding 4K and HDMI Cables

Posted by Samantha Bante on Oct 17, 2017 2:00:00 PM

4K technology is quickly and seamlessly taking over the digital landscape. It is not being used in TVs, television production, computer monitors, projectors, etc. With this rise in resolution, it's becoming important to understand what 4K is and all of its accompanying features to make sure you are enjoying your images to their fullest potential.

In this post we are going to explain a little bit about what 4K is, what HDMI cables are and which ones may be right for you. Let's begin:

What is 4K?

4K is technology that processes a clearer, more precise image through resolution on a screen. Resolution is defined as how many pixels are in a display. These pixels are essentially tiny dots made up of the colors red, blue and green.

These tiny pixels itself are small and granular, but when they come together they provide an image on a screen- the more pixels, the better the image. 4K is normally referred to anything type of screen with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixel or 4096 x 2160. Chroma subsampling helps to define coloring and detail as well within 4K, but we will discuss that at a later date...

There are a great number of television events that are filmed in 4K which help to provide the clearest image possible. For example, the Olympics and the Super Bowl. If you would like to see some more examples, click on this link: https://www.stuff.tv/features/what-watch-in-4k

What are HDMI Cables?

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cables are essentially what let digital audio and video data devices relay messages back and forth between devices. HDMI Cables are a digital replacement for standard analog video. These cables can be used for Televisions, conference rooms, projections, movie theaters screens, etc.

What types of HDMI Cables are there in the market?

  • HDMI Ultra HD 1.3-1.4
    • Provides an audio sampling frequency up to 1563kHZ
    • Can be used for 720 p up to 4K resolutions and has refresh rate up to 30Hz at 6.18 Gbit/s
    • Cables can travel up 20 meters or 65 feet
    • Data rate extends up to 8.16 Gbit/s
  • HDMI 2.0
    • Also can be referred to as HDMI UHD
    • Provides the highest bandwidth so far up to 14.4 Gbit/s
    • Can be used for 720 p up to 4K resolutions and has a refresh rate up to 60 HZ at 12.54 Gbit/s.
    • Most cables can travel up to 5 meters or 16 feet

There are a variety of HDMI cables that are standard and most HDMI cables that are sold can be used for most 4K electronic displays. But, the higher the HDMI cable there is, the greater resolution, the better the image quality there is.
